Centuries Campaign is Halfway There [GW Magazine]

GW’s Centuries Campaign has raised nearly $150 million toward its goal of $300 million by the year 2000. The University kicked off the fundraising campaign in February 1996, and has raised 52 percent of its $175 million goal. The Medical Center has raised 47 percent of its goal of $125 million.
“To raise nearly 50 percent of our goal by the end of the first year is excellent progress,” says Michael J. Worth, vice president of GWs Office of Development and Alumni Affairs. “It shows the great commitment of the University’s alumni, parents and friends in helping to attain a bright future.”
One of the most recent major donors to the Medical Center is Harvey Wertlieb, who gave 4400,000 to found the Harvey Wertlieb Educational Institute in Long-Term Care Management in the university’s School of Public Health and Health Services.
“The institute will provide continuing education and degree curricula, sponsor conferences and seminars and increase the visibility and quality of the profession of long-term care management,” says Worth.
The School of Public Health and Health Services also has attracted considerable support from the Walter G. Ross Foundation, which gave $1.75 million to establish an endowed fund to support the dean’s position in the School.
Ross was a successful Washington businessman and philanthropist whose support for the Medical Center began in the 1960s and now totals more than $5 million. In fact, the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences building, which houses the Basic Science departments and research activities, is named for Ross.
A major gift to the Graduate School of Education and Human Development came in October from Ruth Ann Parker Wells, a 1934 GW home economics graduate. Her gift will establish a graduate student scholarship for education students in need.
The entire University received a gift from the Kiev Library Trust when the trust donated an extensive Judaica book collection to the Gelman Library. The 1. Edward Kiev Judaica Collection comprises more than 10,000 volumes on religion, philosophy, classics, and art.
