Law Briefs: Centuries Campaign Right on Track [GW Magazine]

THE GW LAW SCHOOL IS right on track when it comes to fund raising for the Centuries Campaign, having raised $15.2 million to date. That total accounts for about 43 percent of the Law School’s goal of $35 million. The University-wide fundraising effort aims to raise $300 million by the year 2000.

The campaign was officially launched at a gala at the Willard Hotel last February 7. Robert B. Hirsch, LLB’50, campaign chair and chair of the Law School’s board of advisers, is confident the Law School will meet its goal.

“We are more than 40 percent there, and with continued hard work I know we can go over the goal,” says Hirsch, noting the Law School hopes to raise the money to support faculty positions, students, research, and programs—especially programs in the fields of intellectual property, government procurement, international and environmental law.

Gifts come in many forms, including trusts, bequests, securities and even a $1 million check received from one anonymous donor.

One of the largest endowments so far has been $4 million from the J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Trust. Earmarked to foster studies in public service and environmental law, a quarter of the Shapiro Trust will support law students working at public service agencies in greater Washington. Some of the endowment will support students working in the Shapiro Environmental Law Clinic. The remainder of the money will create for two legal scholars a public service chair and an environmental law chair.

The Jacob Bums Foundation has pledged $100,000 to match dollar-for-dollar all new and increased gifts of $25 or more to the GW Law School Dean’s Fund in 1997.

A posthumous donation came in the name of Dorothy Conlon, wife of the late Charles Conlon Jr., JD’38, who bequeathed $250,000 upon her death. She gave the money to GW as a symbol of her husband’s affection for the school.

GW shows its appreciation for those donors who have contributed $100,000 or more by inducting them into the GW Society, which will hold a special dinner this spring. This year, some of those to be honored include Joseph Brand, JD’63, J.D. Williams, JD’62, and Charles T Manatt, JD’62.
