DELAWARE MARKET HOUSE CHOSEN TO CATER HILLARY CLINTON FUNDRAISER
Gladwyne, PA, April 15, 2008—Delaware Market House was chosen from a list of a dozen Main Line catering companies to prepare a feast for the Hillary Clinton fundraiser held April 11 in Penn Valley.
Chef Kim Alvarez got the call a few weeks ago from Marjie Katz, co-chairman of the fundraiser.
“We picked the Delaware Market House to cater this important event because of its excellent reputation for serving delicious food, and also for being an incredibly easy and enjoyable company to work with,” says Katz, who worked with Chefs Kim and Edgar Alvarez to choose the menu.
Katz expected several hundred Clinton supporters to turn out for the event, but wasn’t sure exactly how many people turn out.
“Knowing how much work Marjie Katz and her committee put into this event we figured a lot of people would attend the event,” explains Kim Alvarez, a 1994 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America who worked as a executive sous chef at the Striped Bass and head chef of Beaujolais Restaurant, both in Philadelphia, before buying the Delaware Market House with Edgar in 2004.
Chef Edgar, a native of Guatemala who met Kim met at the Striped Bass where he was a sous chef, agreed.
“We know from experience that when a good party gets going the food quickly disappears, so we always like to prepare plenty to keep the fun going,” adds Edgar then went on to work as a chef at such notable Philadelphia bistro as Phillippe Chin, Doc Street, and the Black Sheep Pub.
Having catered plenty of fundraisers and other special events, the chefs suggested the fundraiser menu reflect Clinton’s strengths as a candidate. They decided on a menu that featured good old American fare — with an international twist: mini-cheeseburgers with all the fixings, piles of warm grilled cheese sandwiches, spring rolls with an orange and soy dipping sauce, chicken satay with Thai peanut sauce, and patriotic fruit bowls teeming with beautiful red strawberries, white grapes, and blueberries.
The food was plentiful, and as it turned out needed, for more than 300 showed up — raising more than $300,000 for the Clinton campaign.
Samantha Burmberger, who hosted the event at her home, was glad she and Katz chose to work with the Delaware Market House.
“The food was fantastic,” says Burmberger. “Everyone was so excited to be there in support of Hillary, but they couldn’t stop talking about how yummy the food was. I’m so glad we decided to hire Delaware Market. It has long been one of my favorite gourmet markets to shop at, and now I’ll also be recommending their catering services to everyone I know.”
